Non-mirrored faces for face, chest, etc.

This shows changing a mirrored face to a flat planar welded face without mirroring. It is used when a center seam is not desired (which is usually the case) or the model texture will be asymmetrical.

Here we are going to take the previous project and change it to show the non-mirrored method. On a real project, the process would be introduced earlier in your workflow.

In other words, there is no need to mirror, then change to not mirrored. You would simply do the mirrored parts first, setting aside the face or chest, then map the non-mirrored parts near the end of the process, after the Unwrap UVW modifier was collapsed and the model was re-mirrored.

On an actual project the model, the costume, and your own creativity and problem solving will completely determine your choices and placement of seams. Onwards!

Faces we want to change:

Planar map front

Scale and move into an area you can work in

Planar map each side

Move UVs into relative position

Same on the other side

Under the chin ...

(All the selections we make are completely arbitrary here, as we don’t have an actual texture in mind. Beyond this practice file, you will ultimately make your own decisions with models that have head gear, beards, or who-knows-what that will guide your choice for where seams will be located.)

Sides, lower ...

Weld

Rearrange UVs

Done. As you can see the process is flexible. You can combine mirroring and non-mirrored faces in the same unwrap.
