Displace map terrain

Change units to feet.

 

Make a 6 foot tall man for reference.

Change back to generic units.


Make a plain 3000x3000 generic units. Make 50x50 segments:

 

Add Displace modifier to the plane:

Open PSD. Make a 2046x2048 file, 72 ppi.


Fill 50% gray … go Edit/Fill …

Paint height in white, and valleys in black.

Save as terrain.psd.

Back to Max

Open the Displace rollout … click bitmap NONE … find your terrains.psd.

Make strength = 450, luminance center on:

 


Make a texture in photoshop …. Save as terrain_rgb.psd:

Make this a regular diffuse map in the material editor and apply to the plane in max:
