Import the dxf or obj file ...

Get in Edit mode ... rotate ...

  

Divide ...

 

T is the hot key for EDIT ... stay in Edit mode ...

To ROTATE the mesh as an object you make the drag OFF the model, on the background or over the rotation tool, but not on the model itself.

TIP: Ctrl-Shift Drag isolates ... Ctrl Shift Click returns.

Use the brushes changing the settings in Transform:

Alt while painting the brush pushes into the model ...

Fine Detail ... divide to level 7 ... hide portions of the mesh as needed (Ctrl-Shift Drag)

Export displacement map

Lower back to Level 1

Tool/Geo/Lower Res

then,

Tool/Displacement/Create Disp Map

Set to 2048x or more

Click CREATE

Map will appear in Alpha Channel

Flip V

Export as 16 bit TIFF

Export model as OBJ

Import both to Max.
