Leave OFFSET alone unless you want a wind-swept dune look ...

 

 

 

The MASK is a GRADIENT RAMP

 

 

Here is a version of the displace map that is a little more complex ... this allows you to get very flat areas and high peaks combined ...

 

 

 

 


The MAP remains the same, but an additional NOISE MASK is applied ... the HIGH and LOW settings here are what makes for a refined control.

 

 

With a Gray Dirt Mix map material and noise gradient environment map, skylight, mr Spot light and Final Gather mental ray.
