Chrome

Have no ambient light in your scene ... make sure it is set to black [the default]:

Make a standard/Raytrace Raytrace material with Black in the ambient and diffuse slots.

No specularity in your material!... that will come with the reflections ... specularity actually IS a reflection.

What’s in the reflection slot? A Falloff map ... of the type FRESNAL.

Fresnel ... means on a sphere, the EDGES reflect MORE than the front:

UNCHECK IOR [index of refraction ... very high in chrome]

GO BACK TO THE MAIN LEVEL OF YOUR MATERIAL. This is where we will be setting IOR. For chrome, anything between 10-20 will work.

Note

If you have nothing in your scene, you need something to reflect, so put an image in environment:

Additive vs. Default

In our raytrace material we get what Blevins considers a more correct reflection which is, raytrace default. The raytrace we get in the reflection slot does not give you a choice and only uses additive. IOW, leave as it is.

You can dirty up your chrome by adding a map in the bump slot:
